•The KunstHaus: The architecture is very different, and does not conform to the usual notions of a building. In the KunstHaus, a permanent Hundertwasser exhibition is on display. Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928 - 2000) was an environmentalist and an outspoken opponent of mass-produced or poorly designed architecture which he felt constrained the creativity of those forced to live within it. His philosophy, his works in the fields of painting, graphics, ecology and architecture are presented. You can also see the works of other avant-garde and modern artists.

•Hundertwasserhaus: Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928 - 2000) designed this apartment building. The building caters for the individuality of those living there. Each apartment, door and window is different and the tenants can alter their apartments both inside and outside. The exterior walls are therefore a patchwork of mosaics, colour and decoration.

From the hills of the Vienna Woods enjoy magnificent views of the vineyards and the city. On the way back you will pass through the romantic wine growing village of Grinzing.

You will then board a boat from Reichsbrücke or Schwedenplatz for an enjoyable boat ride that will last for 1 hour 40 minutes.

Wengen is a picturesque old-fashioned village sitting in the beautiful glacial Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Eiger-Monch-Jungfrau Mountain range. Wengens’ charm is enhanced by the cog railway system built over a hundred years ago and still in service, ferrying skiers up to the village and ski slopes.

Skiing in Wengen – The Mountains

Wengen itself has almost 100km of pistes in and around the village and is linked to neighbouring resorts Grindelward and Murren, creating an area consisting of 190km of skiable terrain. The two main ski areas are Kleine Scheidegg, which Wengen shares with Grindelward and is accessed by the train, a scenic 25 mins away, and Mannlichen, reached by a cable-car from Wengen village.

Beginners can choose from 15 blue runs, and the nursery slopes are conveniently located in the village and higher up at Kleine Scheidegg, offering novices the same stunning views as more accomplished skiers. The ski schools at Wengen have a great reputation and offer excellent English-speaking tuition and comprehensive instruction. With the majority of the runs being red, intermediate skiers have plenty to keep them busy, from the long smooth trails of Mannlichen to the shorter, steeper runs of Kleine Scheidegg, and the entire region is characterized by exceptionally long, groomed trails, the longest in the Jungfrau region reaching 16km.

Expert skiers should try the legendary Lauberhorn World Cup downhill course, the longest world cup run in the world. Once more advanced skiers have exhausted the 10 black runs available at Wengen (including the appropriately named Oh God), there is plenty of off-piste to be explored with a guide. Wengens’ slopes are served by a total of 23 lifts, including the delightful yet antiquated train, a gondola and a new cable-car connecting up to Mannlichen.

Skiing in Wengen – The Village

The après-ski in Wengen is quiet and fairly subdued. The traditional Alpine village, with its’ car-free streets, exudes a calm peaceful atmosphere and when the lifts close the bars, such as Marys’ Café, the Snow Bar and The Tanne Bar, all provide inviting après-ski entertainment.

Wengen offers a surprising number of good restaurants, mainly in the local hotels, and the resort shuts down relatively early, with the exception of a couple of late-night bars and one nightclub, Tiffanies. Whilst skiing in Wengen, visitors should not miss a trip to the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454m and part of the international rail network, or the revolving restaurant at the top of the Schilthorn, featured in the Bond movie “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. Curling, tobogganing and snow hiking are popular non-skiing pastimes in Wengen.

Villars, sitting on a sunny plateau just above the Rhone Valley, is a relaxed ski resort offering great beginner terrain and a wonderful family-friendly atmosphere. Long known as a health resort, visitors have been flocking to Villars since the turn of the twentieth century, and today it offers a peaceful base, with modern facilities and magnificent scenery.

Skiing in Villars – The Mountains

Villars itself is an ideal beginners resort, with 125km of immaculately groomed pistes, sunny skies and beautiful scenery. Sitting at a height of 1,300m, the fairly low altitude and south-facing position of the slopes sometimes result in patchy snow cover, but the resort has invested in snow-making facilities to compensate. Over half of the 67 trails are rated as easy, and the nursery slopes are located at village level, with 2 ski schools offering expert tuition. From the village, a mountain railway ascends up to Bretaye, at 1,800m, treating skiers to a wonderfully scenic 20 minute trip, and from here a series of lifts radiate in all directions.

There is a good selection of beginner and intermediate terrain, and some lovely runs through the trees back down to the village. A gondola also leads from the village up to the Roc, from where there are more challenging trails, including some decent black runs. Villars shares its’ ski area with the neighbouring town of Les Diablerets, with its’ glacial peak rising up to 3,200m, offering more snow-sure slopes, and a good mix of terrain for all levels. More expert skiers in Villars will find a limited amount of trails, but plenty of off-piste to keep them busy. Snowboarders, like skiers, will find a wealth of easy terrain, with more experienced riders tending to explore off-piste, and Villars is home to a snow-park.

Skiing in Villars – The Village

Villars is a popular resort with the Swiss, and its’ close proximity to Geneva makes it easily accessible. The resort is one of the best in the Alps for families, with many childrens’ facilities and activities. Verbier is well-known for its’ expert terrain, notably the Mont Gele glacier and the huge moguls of the Tortin snow bowl, and the entire area is a mecca for those who prefer the challenge of off-piste skiing. A brand new gondola takes skiers up to Plattjen, at 2,500m and from here some winding blues and cruising reds leads back to the village, taking in a 750m vertical drop. The Felskinn area is served by the Alpine Express Gondolas, whisking skiers up to 3,000m and arriving at a very popular ski area with plenty of interesting trails, and then the Metro Alpin underground carries those wishing to ski on the year-round glacial slopes of the Mittelallalin up a further 500m.

From here the views are just spectacular and a trip to the highest revolving restaurant in the world is a must. Guides are available to those looking for off-piste adventures and Saas Fee is also home to a snowboarding park on the glacier, offering both half and quarter pipes, and various rails and jumps.

Both of these resorts are accessible by free ski bus and they add an additional 100km of terrain to the Leysin area, with extra days offered in Gstaad and Chateau d’Oex. Also available with a six day pass is skiing in a multitude of resorts including Les Portes du Soleil, Les Marecottes, Crans Montana, Anzere, Naz and Champery Les Lacs.

Skiing in Gstaad – The Mountains

Gstaad is the hub of the Gstaad Super Ski Region, with neighbouring resorts of Chateau D’Oex, Rougemont, Saanen, Schonried, Saanenmoser, Zweisimmen, St Stephan, Lauenen, and Gsteig offering a combined skiable area of 250km. The area is served by 70 lifts and reaches a top elevation of 2,000m. The four main valleys surrounding Gstaad are home to these resorts, with the entire area being divided into 6 sectors. The sector incorporating Gstaad is divided into 3 main ski areas – Eggli, Wispile and Wasserngrat - offering 85km of well-groomed pistes served by 17 lifts.

Bohinj, situated in northwestern Slovenia, in the Julian Alps at the edge of the Triglav National Park, is known to be one to the most beautiful unspoilt ski areas in the country. The resort is home to the largest natural lake in Slovenia, Lake Bohinj, which sits beneath a giant glacier, and the scenery in the surrounding areas is simply stunning.

Many small villages scattered around the lake make up the resort, and the skiing is found on two different areas of Mount Triglav - Kobla and Vogel. The skiing here at Bohinj caters mainly for beginners and intermediate level skiers, and is a great all round budget destination for families.

Skiing In Bohinj – The Mountains

Skiing in Bohinj offers visitors 58k of pistes, and the area is served by 15 lifts. Kobel, the largest of the two, is located above the main village, Bohinjska Bistrica, which is accessible from the other villages of Bohinj by the ski bus or train. From the village, a series of chair-lifts takes passenger up to a height of 1,480m and from here, skiers can enjoy 20km of mainly wide, long runs through the trees, including a FIS approved run.

Kobel also offers night skiing, available on the Kozji Hrbet trail. The second ski area is Vogel, offering 35km of marked trails, mainly for more advanced skiers, with a gondola whisking skiers up to an altitude of 1,800m. With nursery slopes found at this height, beginners can take in the stunning views and magnificent scenery of the Julian Alps, whilst perfecting their technique.

The Zagarjev Graben, a 6km long run with a 1,230m vertical, offering plenty of challenges for experts, and guides are available to help navigate the off-piste terrain. Bohinj is home to some scenic cross-country trails, including a 10km run leading from Bohinjska Bistrica all the way to the lake, and for a change of scene, the lift pass also covers the peaceful resort of Bled, less than an hour away by bus.

Bohinj Skiing – The Après-ski

Bohinj is a traditional resort, with low-key après-ski venues spread throughout the various
villages. Friendly Slovenian bars can be found in most of the hotels, including the Ski Hotel Vogel, which is reached by gondola at the top of the Vogel ski area, and has the best views around. Bohinj is a very friendly resort, and caters for the influx of tourists with good child-care facilities and a wide range of shops. There are some scenic hiking trails to be found in and around Brohinj, and other non-skiing activities include ice-skating, ice-climbing, paragliding, and swimming.

The resort offers a wealth of sporting facilities and the skiing in Bled is best suited to beginners and intermediates. Bled is a resort rich in history, and is an ideal base for exploring the beautiful surrounding countryside and taking local excursions.

Skiing In Bled – The Mountains

Although Bled is not a ski resort in the traditional sense, skiing here covers five main areas, Straza, Zartnic, Pokljuka, Vogel and Kobla, with a combined skiable terrain of 88km, served by 22 lifts. All are available on one lift pass and can be reached by free ski bus. The local skiing is based at Straza, a modern area at a peak of 600m, close to the centre of Bled.

The skiing here is limited, with just two slopes used mainly by the ski school, however they are maintained by snowmaking facilities and open at night. More extensive skiing can be found just 10km away, in Zatrnik, with a total of 16km of trails, again suited to beginners and intermediate skiers.

The highest point of Zatrnik is Berjanca, at 1,200m, and from here some good intermediate runs can be found, and also a couple of decent blacks, including one that has played host to the world cup slalom races. Further along the Pokljuka plateau is an area of 21km of cross-country trails, and then more downhill skiing at the major areas of Vogel and Kobla, found in the resort of Blohinj.

The skiing here is the most extensive on the Bled pass, with both ski areas offering a total of 60km of pistes, reaching 1,800m. Kobla sits above the largest village of Blohinj, and is reached by ski bus or train, offering 20km of slopes served by six lifts and snowmaking facilities, whilst Vogel is reached by a gondola, taking skiers up to a height of 1,800m. From here, there are trails for all abilities, and fantastic views of the surrounding mountains. Both Kobla and Vogel boast high verticals of 1,000m and 1,200m respectively, in good conditions.

Bled Skiing – The Après-ski

Bled is a quiet relaxed ski resort, and has a good choice of laid-back bars and restaurants, some offering live music, and all of them exceptionally good value for money by English standards. The village is home to a casino, cinema and a bowling alley and other activities for non-skiers include an ice-skating rink, a swimming pool, tobogganing and horse and carriage rides. From the resort of Bled, the capital city of Ljubljana, with its’ wonderful architecture, charming city squares and lively bars and cafes, is an easy day trip, as are the phenomenal karst caves of Postojna.
